Steps to Save a Life

The first thing you must realize, is that you have a right
NOT to be beaten.

I.

IT IS A CRIME:  For any person to cause you any physical injury or harm even if that person is a member of former member of your family or household.

II.

 TELL A POLICE OFFICER:

A.

If you, your child or any other household member has been injured.

B.

If you feel you are going to be in danger when the officer leaves your residence or at a later time.

III.

YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO:

A.

Ask the local prosecutor to file a criminal complaint against the person committing family violence.

B.

Apply to a court for an order to protect you (you should consult a prosecuting attorney, or a private attorney).  You cannot be charged a fee by a court in connection with filing, serving, or entering a protective order.

A COURT CAN ISSUE AN ORDER THAT:

A.

Prohibits the abuser from committing further acts of violence;

B.

Prohibits the abuser from threatening, harasing, or contacting you at home;

C.

Directs the abuser to leave your household;

D.

Establishes temporary custody of the children or any property.

A VIOLATION OF CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF COURT-ORDERED PROTECTION MAY BE A FELONY.
